Our internship program is offered during the fall and spring semesters and is open to University of North Dakota students from any major.

The program is designed for students who can enroll for academic credit according to criteria set up by their department. We will work with you and your department to help you understand how to enroll for credit. We also accept volunteers, if you do not qualify for credit.

Studio One provides opportunities for University of North Dakota students to gain practical experience in the communication industry. Students deal with every facet of creating a live television show by working in teams.

Video Journalist | Marketing | Weather | Graphic Design

Video Journalist

JOB DESCRIPTION
Video Journalists are responsible for producing stories for Studio One. They generate story ideas, interview various people relating to the story topic, write scripts, shoot and edit video.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Works with the news team to generate ideas, develop story angles and set up shoots for video.
2. Arranges and conducts interviews, writes stories and edits video. 3. Works with other reporters to schedule equipment, shoot and edit stories.
4. Attends two weekly team meetings. (Mondays 4:00 - 5:00 p.m., Fridays 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.)
5. Works to keep up with local and national news.

REQUIREMENTS
1. Ability to remain positive during challenging situations.
2. Ability to work in a team situation.
3. Strong communication and organizational skills.
4. Must have a valid driver’s license, ability to climb a ladder and lift 50 lbs.

PREFERENCES
The following skills and related job experience are preferred in candidates, but are not required:
1. Some experience as a print, television or radio reporter.
2. Some experience as a photographer or video editor.
3. Successful completion of courses that relate to this job description.
4. Experience in a leadership role. 5. Ability to write, shoot and edit video.

In addition, candidates must be available for approximately 12 hours a week. This includes two regularly scheduled weekly meetings: Mondays 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Fridays 8:00 - 9:00 A.M. The amount of hours per week is subject to change depending on circumstances. The video journalist position is a one semester non-paid position.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The video journalist is required to follow the guidelines established by the executive directors for on-camera presentation. The video journalist will not alter their appearance without first seeking approval from their team leader. Team leaders will not approve the following: visibly pierced facial parts with body rings; drastic changes in hair color; drastic changes in hair length, including hair extensions; and/or facial tattoos. Video journalists will be expected to read copy and accurately pronounce words at a style and rate consistent with national broadcast standards. In addition, video journalists cannot publicly endorse products, services or political campaigns.

Marketing

JOB DESCRIPTION
The marketing staff is responsible for building an audience, promoting the show, working with guests during the live production and assisting with recruiting. Staff members report to the marketing director.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Works with the marketing director to develop a marketing plan for the telecast season.
2. Develops a professional presentation to present the marketing plan to the Studio One executive council.
3. Implements items in the plan according to a schedule developed by the marketing director.
4. Provides assistance and staffing for the Studio One recruiting program.
5. Works in one or several of the following positions on show day: guest relations staff, tour guide, greeter or photographer.
6. Helps the stage manager or floor manager with in-studio guests.
7. Participates in post-production meeting.

REQUIREMENTS
1. Strong communication and organizational skills.
2. Ability to remain positive during challenging situations.
3. Ability to work in a team situation.

PREFERENCES The following skills and related job experience are preferred in candidates, but are not required:
1. Some experience in advertising, marketing, public relations or sales.
2. Successful completion of courses that relate to this job description. In addition, candidates must be available for approximately 10 - 12 hours a week, including the following times: Mondays 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. (only for news release writers/audience development) Tuesdays 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. (only for news release writers) Tuesdays 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Thursdays 3:00 - 6:30 P.M. Hours are subject to change depending on circumstances. Positions on the marketing team are one-semester, non-paid, positions. Must have a valid driver’s license, ability to climb a ladder and lift 50 lbs.

Weather

JOB DESCRIPTION
The weather team produces the weather segments of the show. They gather data from various sources and create maps and graphics using animation software. Weather team members also serve as weather reporters. A reporter is assigned a story, interviews various people relating to the topic, writes scripts and edits video.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Works with the weather producer anchor to gathers data from various sources to produce elements of the weather segments.
2. Works with the weather anchor to prepare a national, regional and a current condition synopsis.
3. Operates the production switcher, audio board and graphics computer, when needed.
4. Works with the weather producer and anchor to improve show elements.

REQUIREMENTS
1. Ability to remain positive during challenging situations.
2. Ability to work in a team situation.
3. Strong communication and organizational skills.

PREFERENCES The following skills and related job experience are preferred in candidates, but are not required:
1. Some meteorology experience in radio and/or television.
2. A basic understanding of general weather patterns and meteorology terminology.
3. Coursework that relates to this job description.
4. Experience in graphic software.
5. Ability to shoot and edit video.

In addition, candidates must be available for approximately 7 hours a week. This includes two regularly scheduled weekly meetings: Wednesdays 3:00 – 4:00 P.M. Thursdays 3:00 - 6:30 P.M. The amount of hours per week is subject to change depending on circumstances. The weather team position is a one semester non-paid position. Must have a valid driver’s license, ability to climb a ladder and lift 50 lbs.

Graphic Design

JOB DESCRIPTION
The electronic graphics designer is responsible for creating graphics used during various segments of our live television show. The designer uses a combination of photos, graphics, and text to visually support content on the show. During the live production the designer operates computer graphic equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Works with the senior director and graphics director to design and create graphics that support program content.
2. Operates computer graphic equipment during the live show.

REQUIREMENTS
1. Some experience in graphic design. This includes an understanding of graphic composition.
2. Strong communication and organizational skills.
3. Coursework that relates to this job description.

In addition, candidates must be available for approximately 7 hours a week, including the following times:

Tuesdays - flexible times
Thursdays 3:00 P.M. - 6:30 P.M.

The amount of hours per week is subject to change depending on circumstances. The graphic designer is a one semester non-paid position.
